South Quay redevelopment project, Isle of Dogs

This project was done by a group of four students including me, during the educational year 2017 in the university of westminster, the main task was to identify three different areas within the site as a successful area, unsuccessful area and a main area that needs redevelopment.

South Quay is an area with London Docklands undergoing fast-paced development, for which the local authority have produced a master plan to help guide and coordinate development in a way that benefits ‘existing and future’ communities.

for the purposes of this project the team have chosen three sites: the site that was identified as unsuccessful is on the opposite side of south quay facing the water at the other end of marsh wall, for which some analysis and outline proposals were offered. Canary wharf station area was selected as a site that demonstrates some success as a public realm, for which an analysis was provided by the team.

finaly the main site for the redesign proposals is a vacant plot on the west of south quay area, which was dubbed as “Cuba Place”.

Redesign proposal for Cuba place

The team propose to install a large multi-functional structure in the centre of the site, represented by the hand here. This was chosen because it brings something recognisably human to a space dominated by impersonal towers. Taking cues from the site’s heritage, we propose the use of dyed rope installations into which seating can be integrated, forming connecting elements through the site, giving it a visual language and texture that can easily be expanded beyond the site. Along with the sculpture, these elements juxtaposed with the landscaping clearly signal this is an irreverent place to play, relax and have fun.
